We’ve always known this at SendOwl, and it’s why we offer download and streaming limits, expiring links, and PDF stamping

But not everyone sells PDFs or videos. An increasing number of creators sell Excel templates, packing lists, and PowerPoint templates - in other words, they’re selling Microsoft Office files that make their customers’ lives easier, simpler, and neater.

That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce Microsoft Office Document Locking, a new SendOwl feature designed to help creators and merchants protect their Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and PowerPoint slide decks.

With just one click, you can now apply password protection to your Office files directly inside SendOwl.

Every buyer receives their own unique passphrase automatically, keeping your work secure while making the buying experience both personal and seamless.

Why It Matters to Merchants

For Matt Ting, founder of Peak Frameworks, the new feature solved one of his biggest business challenges.

“We primarily sell content and informational resources, so piracy and file sharing is a large consideration for us,” says Ting. “Because of SendOwl, we can now lock every customer's course files with their email to discourage file sharing. Every PDF is stamped with their customer email and transaction ID, and every Excel file is locked with their email.”

Peak Frameworks helps thousands of aspiring finance professionals break into investment banking, private equity, and hedge funds through downloadable interview prep courses, financial models, and case studies. It’s highly successful - Peak Frameworks has been operating for 6 years and is one of the leaders in the finance education space. They have been consistently profitable and have generated an excess of $1M in annual profit over the last few years.

And with success comes heightened concerns around piracy. “Excel and Microsoft Office have very weak native protection systems,” Matt mentioned. “Being able to have some level of personalized security is a huge step up.”

Real-World Use

For Matt, the feature was a top request:

“It was my #1 requested feature of SendOwl for a long period of time. I know that many investment firms rely on some form of this in their jobs, and SendOwl provided an elegant way to do this for my course.”

He even offers some advice for other creators:

“This is a great solution for other finance creators or investment firms who want to add a layer of protection to their Microsoft Office files. Any creator that relies on selling spreadsheets should look into this solution. As of right now, I think SendOwl is the only platform with this feature.”

How It Works

  1. Upload your Excel, Word, or PowerPoint file to SendOwl.

  2. Check “Apply full document locking.”

  3. SendOwl automatically generates a unique passphrase for each buyer.

  4. Buyers use that passphrase to unlock their download — no extra steps for you.
